Fort Lauderdale Sharks is an organization that promotes wheelchair basketball in the disabled community by targeting athletic development and competitive exposure. The Fort Lauderdale Sharks mission is to create an opportunity for people with physical disabilities to play a team sport at a recreational and competitive level.
The Sharks will also learn essential skills and life lessons that are consistent with the best practices in athletics and competition. The organization is directed by the Board of Directors and is composed of volunteers within the community.
The Fort Lauderdale Sharks aspires to be an outstanding athletic organization that provides a high-quality experience to the physically disabled athlete.
A high-quality experience is one in which the disabled athlete is coached using the principles of Positive Reinforcement Coaching by: Having fun by playing the game Feeling like an important part of the team regardless of performance Learning “life lessons” that have value beyond the basketball court Learning the skills, tactics and strategies of wheelchair basketball Improving as the athlete is exposed to competition.
The Sharks will recognize the coach as the one who most directly makes this all possible. It is our goal to provide the proper tools for our coaches to be successful. The Sharks and its coaches will adopt the values espoused by the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and will be a true representative of the NWBA. Ultimately, the Fort Lauderdale Sharks is committed to creating a constructive culture in which coaches, volunteers, fans, and athletes work together to achieve our mission.
